It’s no secret that kids aren’t always the biggest fan of having their picture taken. They might feel a bit shy around new faces, whether they’re bursting with energy or a little reserved. If you’re worried about staying present while your kids are running wild, I have a few magic tips for you!

Authentically You
First and foremost, I want you to embrace your true, authentic selves during the session. – It’s all about having fun with your kids! Just be yourselves! My goal is to capture your family in its natural state, complete with all the smiles and cuddles. I want to get every family member looking at the camera with a smile, but I’ll be the first to tell you, some of your favorite photos to look back on of your family will be the snuggly, laughing, silly ones. Come prepared to have fun! You’ve already put in the effort to get everyone ready and out the door on time; let me handle the rest.

Movement
Kids are meant to be active and release their energy! Some of my fondest childhood memories involve my mom being silly and joining in our play. Think about what activities your kids enjoy—do they love swinging on their dad’s arm? Do they like snuggling in their mom’s embrace? Maybe they enjoy playing games? Engaging them in activities can shift their focus from just taking pictures to playing games with mom & dad.

Talk About the Photoshoot with your kids
Share what they can expect, where you’re headed, and tell them my name. You might even show them a picture of me. Let them know that I love having fun too! Over time, they’ll feel like we’re already friends, and by the end of the session, we’ll be the best of buds!

Positive Reinforcement
Kids thrive on knowing how well they’re doing, so I’ll be sure to give plenty of compliments. Bringing along a small reward can also be beneficial, especially if your children respond well to positive incentives, such as a little treat (like tictacs or small candies). Having something fun to look forward to after the photoshoot, like ice cream or dinner at a favorite restaurant, can be a great motivator!

Communicate with your Partner
Share these tips with your spouse to ensure you both have the same mindset and are aligned for the photoshoot.

Quality Time
Together, we can create an environment that fosters cherished memories and meaningful family moments. As I mentioned, I want to capture everyone smiling and looking at the camera, but isn’t the goal of photos is to remember who everyone was at that stage? We can capture all their little quirks, silly giggles in-between the tender moments of you with your babies. Family sessions are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy intentional family time that’s frozen in still.
